What does spam cost me?

Unsolicited commercial email (UCE) costs the sender very little yet consumes time and resources for both Internet Service Providers and their customers. It has been estimated that last year UCE potentially cost American companies $8.9 billion in lost productivity, bandwidth consumption, technical support and other technical resources [Ferris Research, 2003].

Services

Mail clients often hide header information from you. This tends to make messages easier to read, but it can also cloak a spammer's identity.

The notes below will show you how to reveal full message headers on most common mail clients.

MAC OS

Eudora: Click on the message you wish to display the full headers of. Click on the button titled "Blah Blah Blah." Once you click this button the full headers should be displayed.

Internet Mail 3.0: Click on "Edit" on the menu bar located at the top of the screen. This will bring up another menu. Select "Preferences" from this menu. Once in the "Preferences" window, expand the "Mail and News" section by clicking on the triangle. Now select "Display" from the list located below. Check the option "Show message headers in message windows." by clicking the box next to it. Click OK. Now click on the message that you want to see the full headers of.

Netscape 6 Mail: First open the mail interface for Netscape 6. At the top of the screen click on "View" -> "Headers" -> select "All." Then select the message you want and click the forward button at the top of the screen. When the message window opens you will see the full headers displayed.

Netscape Messenger 4.x: Click on the message that you wish to display the full headers of. Click "View" from the menu bar located at the top of the screen. This will bring up another menu. Select "Headers" and then "All." This should display all the headers in the message.

Outlook Express: Click on the message you wish to display the full headers of. Now click on "View" from the menu bar, located at the top of the page. This will display another menu. From this menu select "Source." This will display the full headers for the message.

MAC OS X

OS X Mail: Click on the message you wish to display the full headers of. Select the "Mail" menu at the top. Click on "Preferences" then select "Viewing" and change "Show header detail" to "All." Full headers should now be displayed.

PC

Eudora: Double click on the message you wish to display the full headers of. When you do this it will display the message. Now click on the button that reads "Blah Blah Blah", the full headers should now be displayed.

Internet Mail: Right click on the message that you wish to see the full headers of. This should bring up a new menu. From the menu left click on "Properties." Left click on the "Details" tab located at the top of this window. This new window will display the full headers for the message.

Netscape 6 Mail: First open the mail interface for Netscape 6. At the top of the screen click on "View" -> "Headers" -> select "All." Then select the message you want and click the forward button at the top of the screen. When the message window opens you will see the full headers displayed.

Netscape Messenger 4.x: Double click on the message that you want to display the full headers of. Once selected click on "View" located at the top of the window. This should display a menu. Now click on "Document Source" located within this menu. This should open a new window that contains the message displayed with full headers.

Outlook Express: Right click on the message that you wish to see the full headers of. Then left click on "Properties." Left click on the "Details" Tab at the top of the window. The full headers should now be displayed.
